Peru
is located on the western central coast of South America. There are
three main natural regions: the Coast, the Andes mountains and the Amazon
Basin. The major cities and the largest part of the population is located
on the Coast, a mainly desert area and the commercial center of the
country. The Andean region or Sierra, has an average altitude of 3,000
meters and was the center of the Inca culture. The Amazon Basin covers
more than 60% of the country, only 5% of the population inhabit the
region. The area is covered with tropical forest and extensive nature
reserves.
Peru
is the third largest country in South America with a population of nearly
25 million. The country has a rich ethnic mixture: 54% indian, 32% mestizo,
12% white and Spanish descent, 2% African and Asian minority. The capital
city is Lima, located on the central coast of Peru, with a population
of over 7 million inhabitants. Other important cities are Cuzco, Arequipa,
Trujillo, Piura, Iquitos.
Peru
has two official languages: Spanish and Quechua. Spanish is the main
language, but Quechua is widely spoken in the Andes. There are a variety
of native languages in the Amazon Basin, each belonging to an ethnic
group.
Peruvian
culture is one of the richest in South America, and can be considered
a "mestizo culture"; the product of Inca and Spanish cultures.
