A personal message from Libby Mitchel, facilitator: Whatever your goals may be regarding your performance in English, your success in an English-speaking environment depends on your ability to communicate. Individuals who can verbalize their ideas, so that they are heard and understood, possess one of the primary qualities of leadership, by which they are able to stand out from the crowd. This course aims to polish your communication and leadership skills in English. As a Toastmaster you will learn to overcome the initial nervousness a person feels when called upon to speak before an audience, a discomfort compounded by the difficulty of having to communicate in a foreign language. You will learn how to organize and present your ideas logically and convincingly in English. You will improve your ability to listen to other people’s ideas and evaluate them. And you will develop self confidence that will radiate in every situation. In addition to presenting prepared speeches, yoarticipate in Table Topics—an impromptu speaking exercise that will develop your ability to “think on your feet” in such situations as seminars, interviews, business meetings, and conversations.
